Kalona's Flood Insurance Rate Map

A Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) is an official map of a community, on which FEMA has mapped Flood Hazard Zones applicable to a community. The FIRM is used for the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which provides federally backed flood insurance within communities that enact and enforce floodplain regulations. Kalona's FIRM map was originally established in 2013. After a study conducted by the Iowa Flood Center in 2015, the FIRM was amended to reflect a smaller flood area. The amendment effectively removed hundreds of residential and commercial properties from the FIRM area.
