National Flood Insurance Program
Kalona participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which makes federally-backed flood insurance available in communities that adopt and enforce floodplain management ordinances to reduce future flood damage as recommended by FEMA. Flood losses are not typically covered under renter and homeowner insurance policies. Flood insurance, purchased through an insurance agent, is a separate policy and is available whether the building is in or out of an identified flood-prone area. This site is intended to help Kalona residents to prepare for floods, from insurance to safety.

Discounted Flood Insurance Premiums: Community Rating System
Kalona also participates in FEMA's Community Rating System (CRS) Program as part of the NFIP. The program allows for policyholders to save money by receiving discounts on their flood insurance premium. The goal of the CRS Program is to reward communities that are doing more than the minimum requirements for the NFIP for their efforts related to flood mitigation, floodplain management, and informational outreach. Kalona is currently being evaluated as to which class and discount will be available to policyholders.
