CITY OF KALONA — MANDATORY BOIL ORDER LIFTED 3:45 pm 7/17/26
The mandatory boil order for the City of Kalona has been LIFTED, effective immediately. Water samples were independently tested and have passed all drinking water standards. Tap water is once again safe for drinking, cooking, and all other uses without boiling.
As a precaution, we recommend running cold water taps for several minutes to flush your home's plumbing, discarding the first batches of ice from automatic ice makers, and flushing water-using appliances according to the manufacturer's directions.
Thank you to the entire community for your patience and cooperation throughout this event, and to the crews, contractors, and partners who worked quickly and safely to make the repair and restore service.

Water Main Repair Complete — Distribution System Refilling
July 16, 2026
The water main break on North 14th Street has been repaired. Crews are now opening valves throughout the system, and the pumps have been reengaged to begin refilling the water tower from the North water plant.
Please Use Water Sparingly
For the next few hours, we ask that residents and businesses use water sparingly as the tower returns to normal levels as it fills the distribution system. During this time, you may experience low water pressure. Pressure will improve as the tower comes back to capacity.
Mandatory Boil Order in Effect
The is under a mandatory boil order. Water quality testing will begin tonight at six DNR-approved locations to ensure that all drinking water is safe before the boil order is released. This could happen as early as Friday afternoon based on the testing results. On the above date there was a water main break in the 900 block of 14th Street, Kalona, Iowa that forced the city to shut down the water tower for a period of time to fix
the water main break. Pursuant to DNR Code when water pressure falls below 20 PSI the affected homes must be advised of the Mandatory Boil Order. This is affected homes and
businesses. ION Environmental Services will be sampling water on Thursday with results to be shared on Friday. If test come back negative on Friday, we will release the
boil order. Notice of the lifting of boil order will be posted on the city of Kalona Facebook page and at www.cityofkalona.org.
People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, and some elderly
may be at increased risk. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers.
Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in
apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.
BOIL ALL DRINKING WATER
Your public water system is under a voluntary boil water order. You may need to take the following precautions:
1) Boil water vigorously for three minutes prior to use. Use only boiled water for drinking, brushing teeth, diluting fruit juices and all other food preparations or
consumption. Use of bottled water may be a feasible, though relatively expensive, alternative to boiling tap water when under a boil water order.
2) Do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker or use any ice made with unboiled water from this system. Remake ice cubes with after that has been
boiled or buy ice.
3) Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household
bleach per gallon of water.
4) LET WATER COOL SUFFICIENTLY BEFORE DRINKING
Water used for hand-washing or bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing or using backyard pools so water is
not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE
The City of Kalona will be holding a Public Hearing to review an application for a State Revolving Fund
(SRF) loan and to make available to the public the contents of an environmental information document
and the City’s project plan. These documents include design and environmental information related to
the proposed improvements to the City’s water supply system.
The proposed project includes construction of approximately 8,600 feet of water main, installation of
two new wells, improvements and expansion of the existing Kalona water treatment plant, and all
necessary connections and appurtenances.
The purpose of this Public Hearing is to inform area residents of the community of Kalona of this
proposed action, discuss the actual cost and user fees associated with this project, and to address citizen’s
concerns, if any, with the plan.
